What we do

 

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

Purpose


The post holder will be part of a small team working to address Sexual Violence in armed conflict, other situations of violence and detention settings. As such, the post holder will be directly involved in the team’s day-to-day activities, as described below.
 

The Addressing Sexual Violence Team’s role is to support ICRC operational activities addressing sexual violence in armed conflict, other situations of violence and detention settings. It does so by:
 

  • Coordinating the work of different units engaged at Headquarters and in the field
  • Supporting field delegations in design and implementation of activities addressing sexual violence, in line with the ICRC’s Institutional Strategy on Sexual Violence 2018-2022.
  • Supporting training and sensitization of ICRC staff on the issue of sexual violence (including through ensuring the issue is included in internal trainings, delivering training, and sensitization sessions, developing case studies and briefing individual staff members)
  • Supporting the representation of ICRC’s work on sexual violence in international fora
  • Developing and coordinating institution-wide initiatives related to sexual violence, such as research projects, development of institutional positions on related issues, development of new tools and institutional documents etc.
  • Supporting donor relations, planning and reporting on ICRC activities to address sexual violence.

 

The post holder would support the Head of the Addressing Sexual Violence Unit in all of these tasks to a varying extent, depending on skills and experience, as well as the Team’s needs and capacities.

Accountabilities & Functional responsibilities

 

  • Manage ICRC’s online ‘Community of Practice’ on addressing sexual violence, which is the central platform for all ICRC staff working on sexual violence to share experiences, lessons learned, best practices and ask questions.
  • Prepare draft and edit briefing notes, speeches and statements, articles and institutional papers on issues related to sexual violence in armed conflicts for internal and external use;
  • Review and monitor guidance documents, reports and other materials produced by other ICRC units or external stakeholders to ensure consistent messaging on sexual violence;
  • Support the representation of the Sexual Violence Team at relevant internal and external meetings, draft agendas and minutes of meeting, and follow up as necessary;
  • Assist in the organisation of events and training courses related to sexual violence;
  • Provide administrative and coordination support to ongoing research and projects related to the issue of sexual violence, as applicable
  • Realize briefings/debriefings of ICRC staff on the issue of sexual violence and advertise the core related documents.
Essential and desirable requirements

 

Essential:
 

  • Master's degree in humanitarian action, gender studies,  international relations or law, sociology, history, anthropology, or a related field;·      
  • Demonstrated strong interest in and knowledge of issues relating to sexual violence;
  • Demonstrated interest working in communication in online fora/social media; 
  • Knowledge of areas related to protection and humanitarian assistance
  • Knowledge of the ICRC mandate, its operations and modalities of work;
  • Capacity for analysis and synthesis of complex ideas;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and strong capacity to work as part of a team;
  • Excellent writing and editing skills;
  • Strong organisational and coordination skills;
  • Demonstrated sense of initiative and capacity to work independently under minimal supervision;
  • Excellent English (both written and oral), with a working level of French, or other language of operational interest to ICRC an asset.



Desirable:
 

  • Work experience in the field related to sexual violence;
  • Demonstrated understanding of survivor centric response to sexual violence.
