What we do


The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.


The Centre of Competence on Humanitarian Negotiation (CCHN) is a common undertaking of five organizations, namely the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue (HD), ICRC, MSF-Switzerland, UNHCR and WFP. The CCHN is governed by a Strategic Partnership agreement between the five initiators and is administratively hosted by the ICRC.

The CCHN aims at facilitating the sharing of experience on humanitarian negotiation practices on the frontline while supporting and contributing to the strengthening of a Community of frontline negotiators building bridges across agencies and regions centered around the specificities of humanitarian negotiations. 

Purpose of the position


The Communication Coordinator is the primary person in charge of internal and external communication about the CCHN, supporting the operational activities and objectives on key themes as well as building and promoting a strong CCHN identity to ensure that a large range of audience attends the CCHN events. The role also contains a variety of additional communications and editorial responsibilities including writing and editing content for national and international audiences. 



Main duties & responsibilities


  • Guiding and contributing to the development and implementation of marketing and communication strategies, and planning of action and thematic campaigns/projects aimed at influencing behavior towards the CCHN and its activities;
  • Providing strategic advice and support to all matters related to internal and external communication about CCHN and its activities;
  • Overseeing the publishing and the uploading of web content tailored to different audiences of the CCHN, in particular, field practitioners, operational managers, policymakers, diplomatic and academic circles;
  • Developing and coordinating communication tools and products of multimedia content that respond to CCHN's strategic communication objectives including:
    • Editorial content on website and community engagement;
    • Social media content.
  • Providing data and statistics upon requests mainly for reporting purposes;
  • In close collaboration with the Logistics Team, support the organization of multi-agency online events, workshops and conferences in the design of event pages, registration forms and preparation of learning resources for participants;
  • Creating and maintaining online surveys and evaluations in support of the Operation Team and external consultants;
  • Developing and maintaining the necessary contacts with communication professionals of partner agencies;
  • Serving as a focal point for all press/media-related issues.


People management responsibilities


The Communication Coordinator supervises the work of one Communication Officer and one Communication Associate. 



  • Internally, interacts with the Operations Team, the Logistics Team, the Digital Officer, and the Research and Development Team;
  • Externally, interacts with suppliers, community members from various local and international organisations, academic circles, governments and local stakeholders.

Education and experience required


  • University degree in communication, international relations or equivalent;
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including good public presentation;
  • Excellent writing and editing skills;
  • Familiarity with communities of practice and peer-support concepts an asset;
  • Experience with user management platforms an asset;
  • Fluent in English and in French and other languages an asset.

Professional experience required


  • Confirmed experience in managing external communication through digital platforms (web, blogs, podcasts, social media);
  • Knowledge of web design and html an asset;
  • Solid experience in building and maintaining web sites and database users;
  • Minimum of five years of work experience working in government, academia, international organizations, NGOs;
  • Previous experience in organizing events;
  • Good written and oral communication skills;
  • Understanding of print, audiovisual and online production processes.

Desired profile and skills


  • Excellent knowledge in MS suite, Teams, Zoom, etc;
  • Ability to work in an autonomous manner in a professional team under tight deadlines;
  • Available for travels.
