Communication Manager of the Foundation for the ICRC

What we do

 

The Foundation for the International Committee of the Red Cross was established in 1931 as an independent Swiss Foundation on a simple idea: to help the ICRC continue its lifesaving work and enhance its capacity to develop and promote international humanitarian law in peacetime as in wartime. 

 

Ninety years on, this mission has become more relevant than ever. The Foundation acts as an investor, a laboratory and an enabler for the ICRC so it can best respond to future humanitarian needs, with the required independence and flexibility. We want to accelerate humanitarian innovation to help deliver a more relevant and sustainable impact for victims of armed conflicts and violence. 

 

The immediate objective is to substantially grow the endowment of the Foundation by engaging UHNWI, companies, foundations and other private and public actors. We are looking for a select number of partners to scale up our activities and establish the Foundation as a key player in the humanitarian landscape. 

Purpose of the position

 

The Communications Manager oversees all the communication activities of the Foundation and contributes to positioning the FICRC as an agile vehicle that accelerates humanitarian innovation and supports ICRC's organisational readiness. They develop and execute communication strategies and produce content that enhances the FICRC's brand by using relevant marketing and communication approaches, both offline and online. They build and promote a strong identity for the Foundation towards its main target audiences. Furthermore, they align their work to the evolving priorities of the Foundation.

Main duties and responsibilities

 

Strategic Communication

  • Oversees all the communication activities, products and content of the FICRC, including website, social media, digital and print. Develops a strong brand identity and coherent positioning. 
  • Develops and executes marketing and communication strategies to promote the FICRC and its focus areas to raise awareness and engage its core audience. Identifies opportunities for media and public engagement. 
  • Manages, supervises and coordinates, internally and with external partners, the development of relevant communication tools and products, e.g. key messages/statements, reports, print products and audiovisual materials. Ensures the quality control of all communication materials. 
  • Develops and manages the content for the FICRC social media accounts and website. 
  • In partnership with the Event and Research Manager, identifies and represents the FICRC at relevant events and other networking opportunities. Ensures an effective promotion and visibility of FICRC's presence at these events. 

 

Administration and Reporting

  • Responds to inquiries from internal and external interlocutors in a timely manner and within the set deadlines. 
  • Proposes and manages the annual budget for her/his agreed plan of action. 
  • Develops concepts and conducts evaluations to obtain lessons learned on key, large-scale projects. 

 

Other

  • Involves the Foundation's governance in her/his activities as needed. 
  • Takes on projects that are not in her/his job description upon request by the Foundation's Director and adapts priorities in accordance with the evolution of the Foundation's priorities.

People management responsibilities

Education required

 

  • University degree or advanced certification in marketing and/or communications.
  • Fluent in English and French.
  • Minimum of B1 level in German. Any other language an asset.
  • Computer proficiency.

Experience required

 

  • At least 10 years' professional experience in the communication/marketing field.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience in managing digital channels (social media, website, etc.).
  • Experience in developing the branding of an organization.
  • Strong interest in humanitarian work, communication experience in an NGO a plus.
