What we do
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide protection and humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and, at the same time, promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.
In order to fulfill its humanitarian mandate, it is imperative for the ICRC to have effective security and crisis management that identifies and mitigates against risks that threaten our global workforce, assets, and reputation, and provides the framework for a rapid and professional response when a serious security incident or a largescale emergency occurs. The Security and Crisis Management Support Division (SCMS) bears chief responsibility for security policy and the provision of operational support through guidance, training, and field missions, as well as facilitating and instigating emergency procedures. The 5 main functions of the division are: 1) Research, Analysis and Development, 2) Security and Safety Risk Management 3) Crisis Management 4) Support to the RCRC Movement and 5) Capacity Building.
Purpose of the Position
This position will focus primarily on the capacity-building function of the Security and Crisis Management Support division's work. The Security and Crisis Management Support division provides a series of courses on security and crisis management for ICRC staff in the field, oversees the content of personal security training for field personnel, contributes to the training provided by other divisions and units within the ICRC and provides tailored training modules and workshops.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
- Supports the continuation and timely resumption of Capacity Building initiatives, particularly face-to-face activities.
- Assists in the preparation and delivery of courses in collaboration with the Learning and Development department in Geneva and regional training centers, including updating and organizing course materials, supporting participant selection, sending invitations, and maintaining course archives.
- Contributes to the development of Crisis Management Simulations (CMS) and workshop held in Geneva and online, ensuring smooth implementation and documentation of outcomes.
- Participates in the development and improvement of didactic tools produced by the SCMS Division, including videos, immersive resources (such as virtual reality modules), and the newly developed Safety and Security Risk Management videos.
- Supports in monitoring and evaluation of Capacity Building activities, collecting participant feedback and helping to integrate lessons learned into future courses.
- Contributes to the division’s internal communication efforts, prepares content for the Security Wiki and the ICRC Intranet to highlight activities and achievements to other departments and field delegations.
- Assists in maintaining and updating knowledge repositories (participant data base, surveys, templates, etc.)
- Collaborates with other departments and external partners on joint initiatives related to security and crisis management learning, fostering cross-departmental and Movement-wide exchanges.
Desired profile and skills
- Masters Degree in a relevant field
- Relevant work experience (including internships, volunteering work) but not more than 2 years of work experience in total, including traineeships.
- Insight into the ICRC and its mandate, and an understanding of the wider Red Cross Red Crescent Movement.
- Demonstrated interest in the field of security, risk management, or crisis management and response.
- Experience of organizing and/or facilitating workshops, conferences, or training courses.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English essential.
Working proficiency in French or any of the following languages: Arabic, Russian or Spanish is an asset. - Strong analytical and organizational skills.
