What we do


The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.



The ICRC’s Department of Communication and Information Management (CIM) is offering a one-year paid traineeship starting May 2021 at the ICRC headquarters in Geneva.

The traineeship will be working for the Communication and Information Management (CIM) Department, and more specifically for the Project Management Office (PMO) and the CIM Navigation team.




The CIM Department leads developments and implementation of the organization’s communication/public positioning and information environment strategies. The CIM department is working on transformations of several of its activities, and as such need support in the area such as communication, organization of training & events, but also on the delivery of projects and some Analytics activities.

The Project Management Office is part of the CIM department and is a team composed of project management professionals, in charge to support ICRC project management teams in effective project prioritization, execution, governance, and delivery of the ICRC's project portfolio in line with organization-wide strategic objectives.

The Navigation Team, also part of the CIM department, has been created during a time of institutional and departmental evolution. Its main priority is to coordinate the implementation of the vision of the ICRC as a best-in-class technology centre and communications hub.

Main responsibilities


The post holder will work together with Project Management Office and Navigation team, and her/his main responsibilities will be the following:

Together with the PMO:

  • Support the organization of project management training & events, as well as internal communication activities
  • Contribute to the organization and follow up of workshops & meetings, collect and organize information, build presentations
  • Support project management Data & Analytics preparation

Together with the Navigation team:

  • Support the Navigation coordinator in the changes about the organizational transformation within the CIM department, in particular, the Archives & Library new organisational design, which is likely to have an effect at multiple levels
  • Support the Engagement Advisor in the delivery of projects related to diversity, equity and inclusion and to the design thinking centre
  • Regularly feed the internal Jive community on Resilience with new articles, resources, and best practices from external sources
  • Propose creative means to strengthen engagement with staff and organize events

Education required


  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant field (project management, communication) OR degree in a different field (ie. International Affairs, Humanitarian Action, New information technologies etc.) and demonstrated interest/experience in Project management; diversity, equity and inclusion, staff-engagement, design thinking methodology.

Professional Experience required


  • A maximum of 2 years of professional experience

Desired profile and skills



  • Fluent English and French
  • Flexibility, self-starting attitude and the interpersonal, organizational and cross-cultural collaboration skills needed to work in a fast-paced, demanding, international environment - Ability to take initiatives and work with minimal supervision, to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • Ability to quickly understand complex organisational issues
  • Strong computer literacy, SharePoint, Windows, Proficiency in MS Office: especially in Excel (dashboard) and PowerPoint (presentations) - familiarity with updating websites/intranet sites would be a plus.
  • Research, analytical, and writing skills
  • A strategic and creative mind
  • Demonstrated interest/experience in several of the below areas: Project management; diversity, equity and inclusion, staff engagement, design thinking methodology
  • Interest in humanitarian concerns and international relations
  • Understanding of the mandate and modus operandi of the ICRC
