What we do

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.


In order to ensure the predictable funding of its operations, the ICRC has set itself the goal to increase income from private fundraising streams. The post-holder will join the resource mobilization team working on fundraising in Switzerland and German speaking countries. The associate will work predominantly with the Philanthropy and Partnership Specialist responsible for German-speaking Switzerland and give support, when and where possible, to other colleagues in the division.


Main responsabilities

  • Support the activities of the Philanthropy and Partnerships Specialists, mainly for the German part of Switzerland, to develop long-term funding partnerships with major donors.
  • Contribute to ensure that major donors (wealthy individuals, foundations, corporates) and prospects receive high-quality stewardship through a variety of communication channels.
  • Conduct prospect research.
  • Update the ICRC’s Customer Relationship Management (CRM) database.
  • Collect information about the ICRC’s operations and ongoing legal and policy issues of interest to private donors and contribute to fine-tuning appealing narratives for major donors, foundations and corporate partners.
  • Help prepare proposals, reports, briefings and presentations.
  • Support information management within the Swiss market, e.g. by monitoring financial income from donors, preparing briefings files, power point presentations, and taking notes at meetings or gathering information to feed reports or newsletters.
  • Provide efficient administrative and technical assistance.
  • Assist with events organisation (face-to-face and virtual) (invitations, update of guests’ replies, answer their questions by email and phone etc.). Help with event logistics as required.
  • Support other colleagues in the Swiss market and in the resource mobilisation division in specific projects.
  • Assist on other tasks not listed here.

Education and profile

  • Bachelor degree in Economics, Marketing, International Relations, Social Sciences, Literature, Arts or equivalent education.
  • Former relationship management or fundraising experience or a strong interest to develop fundraising skills.
  • First experience of working or volunteering in one of the following areas are an asset •International or national humanitarian, social or cultural organizations
    • The Red Cross Movement
    • Marketing, communication, event organization or customer relation
    • Corporate social responsibility

Professional Experience required

Kindly note that a maximum of 12 months of professional experience is accepted in order to be hired as an associate at the ICRC.

  • Excellent oral communication and writing skills. Native German, fluent in French and English. Native Swiss German is an asset.
