Ensure dignified handling of human remains
We work to ensure that the remains of people who have died as a result of war, disaster or migration are recovered professionally, documented accurately, handled with respect and identified whenever possible. This includes conducting forensic examinations in cases of suspected ill-treatment, using appropriate methods and facilities. In so doing, we help to uphold human dignity even in death and to provide families with recognition and closure.
Support States and local players
We work with governments, forensic institutions and local authorities to strengthen their capacity to manage the dead and missing. By providing expertise, guidance and long-term support, we build sustainable local systems that can respond effectively to crises involving mass casualties.
Apply interdisciplinary expertise
Our specialists, from fields such as forensic genetics, pathology and anthropology, design programmes, define strategies and deliver training and advisory services. Their work not only ensures proper technical standards but also contributes to documenting abuses, supporting justice and accountability and providing answers to families searching for their loved ones.
