Field operations overview

At the ICRC, we work closely with communities to understand and meet their needs, using our experience and expertise to respond quickly, effectively and without taking sides. Our staff in the field have the opportunity to work with people from different cultures and backgrounds and to apply their skills to make a genuine difference on the ground. On this page, you will have access to all current open positions in the field.

This page provides information about employment on so-called mobile contracts for roles in the field. Employees on resident contracts, meanwhile, are hired locally to work in a specific position in a specific country. If you wish to receive details about a resident field position, please contact the ICRC delegation in your country of residence. To learn more about employment on a resident contract and local vacancies, see our local opportunities page.

What are the criteria for mobile positions?

  • Fluent level of English: English and French are the official languages of the ICRC. Most delegations are English-speaking, but a third are in French-speaking countries. A very good knowledge of both languages is highly recommended and sometimes required.
  • Unaccompanied assignments for the first 24 months: The first two assignments (minimum 12 months each) must be accepted unaccompanied (no spouse, partner, children or dependents).
  • Deployment where your skills are needed: You must be prepared to go wherever your skills are most needed. With time, you will have more say in determining your assignment.
  • Manual driving licence: Some postings may require driving a car with a manual gearbox for emergencies.
  • Professionals only: At least two years of professional experience are required.
  • International exposure: Experience abroad or in a culture different from your own is particularly sought after.

How long do field assignments last?

Most assignments last 12 months. Depending on the type of work and context, they may last from 3 months to several years.

Please note our recruiters evaluate applications as a whole, considering motivation, experience, languages and soft skills.

Medical standards

All new employees must undergo a medical check-up. Certain conditions (e.g., cardiac diseases, respiratory diseases, severe allergies, mental health issues) require special attention due to limited medical care in field locations. Check the full medical standards list.

Vaccines recommended for travel and long stays abroad, including WHO-recognized COVID-19 vaccination, are mandatory.

Onboarding for mobile contracts

New employees take part in an integration programme to learn about the ICRC’s values, culture, principles, and professional standards. It includes an online phase and a two-week face-to-face session at a regional centre, tailored to their field functions.

Safety of employees

Security is the number one priority. The ICRC relies on dialogue with local players to remain accepted and trusted. Employees are briefed daily on security rules.

Psychological support

Stress management and mental health support are provided before, during, and after assignments, including pre-departure check-ups and debriefings.
