Economic Security Nutritionist
What we do
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide protection and humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and, at the same time, promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.
Purpose
The EcoSec Nutritionist position is based in Kandahar. The nutritionist contributes to nutrition related activities in the AoR of the KAD Sub delegation. She mainly contributes to the community nutrition capacity building project to assist Pregnant/Lactating women and mothers of young children to prevent malnutrition. She contributes to planning, implementing and monitoring of the project. The project will be closely linked to the scale up of the treatment of SAM in ICRC supported health facilities and will involve strong collaboration with the health and other multidisciplinary teams.
Accountabilities & Functional responsibilities
PROJECT MANAGEMENT
- Contributes to analysing the security, socioeconomic, cultural and political environment as it relates to the ICRC in Kandahar AoR areas.
- Contributes to designing, planning and implementing of nutrition projects (based on standard, recognized methods) and rapid methods adapted to objectives, the context and the resources available.
- Contributes to designing and implementing a monitoring system and evaluating the results of nutrition-related activities.
- Collects data using data-collection tools and devices.
- Enters data into and maintains the survey databases.
- Performs basic qualitative and quantitative data analysis.
- Describes results and produces data visualizations.
- Contributes to analysing the food system and households' nutrition situation.
- Provides nutrition-related input to food-system analysis.
REPORTING AND DOCUMENTATION
- Contributes nutrition-related input to the delegation and EcoSec Unit's strategic approaches and activities, given the fluidity of the context.
- Contributes to internal reporting.
- Translates documents for internal use and interprets upon request.
COOPERATION WITH NATIONAL SOCIETY AND PARTNERS
- Coordinates with other in country nutrition and food security actors at the district/provincial or national levels.
- Takes part in expanding or strengthening the delegation's network of contacts among the population, the local authorities and/or other stakeholders.
- Collaborates closely with Health where the prevention and treatment projects intersect as well as with other teams.

Relationships
Internally, interacts with colleagues at local level.
Externally, maintains and develops a network of contacts at the local and district levels (members of the population, community leaders, authorities, NGOs, etc.) in consultation with their direct supervisor.
Certifications / Education required
- Bachelors degree in nutritional science or public health, or equivalent work experience.
- Good command (spoken and written) of English, knowledge of the local language(s).
Professional Experience required
- 3–5 years’ experience in a similar field.
