What we do
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide protection and humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and, at the same time, promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.
Purpose
The Law and Policy Outreach Unit leads the ICRC’s online and onsite outreach to law and policy circles in support of influencing key actors and decision-makers on humanitarian issues. It brings together multidisciplinary outreach capacities encompassing the Humanitarian Law and Policy Blog, as well as the work on online platforms, onsite and online events and digital promotion strategies.
Relying on the expertise and substance developed within the broader department, the unit:
- offers platforms enabling the positioning of the ICRC’s law and policy content (including the International Review of the Red Cross website, IHL in Action website, How does law protect in war? Online Casebook website);
- fosters debate on law and policy through the Humanitarian Law and Policy blog and the organization of thematic events with a global reach;
- offers digital tools and communication advice to promote the ICRC’s law and policy publications, events and initiatives through digital means (Law and Policy Newsletter, Law and Policy Thematic Newsletter, the internal and quarterly internal newsletter, social media campaigns);
- develops and maintains a solid onsite and online events organization expertise guiding the organization of events designed to foster debate on international humanitarian law (IHL), other relevant norms, related policies and positions, including those dealing more broadly with humanitarian action.
Accountabilities & functional responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Head of Unit, the Law & Policy Outreach Multimedia Designer is tasked with ensuring the consistent and professional visual identity of the ICRC’s public law and policy outreach work across varied digital channels and platforms and print products.
Production of promotional and communication materials
- Video production and post-production (video interviews, explainer videos, event highlights, trailers, motion graphics, etc.)
- Design of infographics (static, interactive, and/or animated)
- Design of digital and online publications
- Design of promotional items such as leaflets, posters and other print publications
- Design of newsletters and other online promotional items
Website design and management
- Design and creation of various webpages managed by the Outreach team or other units within the department
- Creation of event pages on www.icrc.org
- Support on other online publishing tasks if needed
Visual Identity and branding
- Ensure all visual communication and elements used by the team on different platforms are adhering to the ICRC visual identity guidelines
- Support on branding and UX design for the different digital platforms managed by the team
Relationships
- Internally, interacts with the Digital Communication Unit, regional communication centres, delegations and units/divisions with digital projects. Interact with CIM COM DIGITAL / CIM CORP PUBLIN, RCCs and other units
- Externally, interacts with design agencies.
Desired profile and skills
- University degree or professional diploma in digital graphic design and visual communication.
- 2-4 years' work experience in a similar field.
- Mastery of digital publishing tools such as Canva, InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator
- Fluent command of English; any additional languages are an asset.
- Well organized, able to handle multiple tasks and prioritize, with the capacity to work under pressure
- Very good analytical skills, able to work in teams as well as independently
