What we do


The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.



We are looking for a Digital Service Designer to join the team responsible for the Digital Humanitarian Platform Challenge. The position aims at completing the Challenge team with strong visual design, design thinking, UX, Information Architecture and marketing competencies throughout the lifecycle of the Challenge.

The Challenge team is in charge of delivering a number of Minimum Viable Products (MVPs) to test a new Digital Platform for people affected by conflict and violence in areas where ICRC operates. The new Digital Humanitarian Platform will enable its users (people in need of humanitarian assistance) to self-register, manage their data in a simple and secure way, and access digital humanitarian services provided by the ICRC and its partners, through a web application and a mobile App. This Platform should also enable its users:

  • to register their contacts and communicate securely with them;
  • to securely communicate and share information with the ICRC;
  • to secure and retrieve a digitized copy of personal documents;
  • to access contextual information as aid
  • to access specific digital humanitarian services delivered by the ICRC and its partners:
  • to register as humanitarian service providers or digital volunteers.

The Digital Service Designer will design and iteratively develop, test and improve the mock ups, prototypes, User Interfaces of the Platform, as well as design presentations, videos and a variety of communication materials required for the Platform Challenge Team to promote and communicate about the Platform’s MVPs and engage its audience. She/he will organize workshops, surveys and interviews of end users and various usability tests for the specific services delivered by the Platform. She/he will directly engage with external interlocutors, end users and representatives of the business units in the field and at the HQ which delivers the services through the MVP.

Main responsibilities


The digital platform will be developed through a series of Minimum Viable Products (MVPs). The Digital Service Designer will participate to all phases and hold design and communication responsibilities:

During the design phase of the MVP

  • Organize workshops, fora, surveys and interviews of representatives of end user groups and business units following a design thinking and beneficiary centric approach;
  • Develop and iteratively improve mock ups and then prototypes of the solutions to get the feedback of end users and business units;

During the development phase of the MVP

  • Participate to all development sprints with the purpose of improving/simplifying the interface/design of the MVP for its users;
  • Conduct usability tests (A/B testing, etc…)
  • Contribute to the communication and change management plan;

During the field deployment / testing phase of the MVP

  • Develop and implement a digital communication strategy to promote and position the Platform MVPs
  • Make practical recommendations to improve the design / interface of the solution
  • Organize surveys and interviews of end users of the MVP to improve the design / interface of the MVP and to improve the services delivered by the platform.
  • Contribute to the report and recommendations related to the testing of the MVP and its related services focusing on the service delivery

During all phases

  • Develop communication materials (presentations and videos) to present, promote the solutions and analyses feedbacks (marketing);
  • Develop internal and public web pages to present and promote the Platform internally and externally.

Desired profile and skills


  • Degree in design or related field.
  • Fluent English, French being a serious asset. Spanish or other languages of ICRC interest are a plus. 
  • At least 10 year of experience in the field of visual design, design thinking, UX, Information Architecture.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience with Digital Solution Desing
  • Deep understanding/expertise of design tools, visual desing and marketing competencies.
  • Experience working in developing economies and context.
  • Excellent analytical, synthetic and communication skills.
  • Good understanding of personal data protection principles.
  • Willing to travel to areas affected by armed conflict where the ICRC is actively involved.
