GIS Associate

What we do

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide protection and humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and, at the same time, promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

To respond to these needs, the ICRC created the Analysis & Evidence (A&E) Unit under the department of Protection & Essential Services. The A&E Unit invests in competencies and thematic expertise with a view of creating a capacity greater than the sum of its components, that is institutional and programmatic in its approach and that allows for a common language, definitions, measurements and understanding across the entire project cycle. Working closely with other departments and in coordination with partners, the A&E Unit is a technical lead for evidence-based programming, supporting the organization on all matters related to situation monitoring and early warning, multidisciplinary needs assessment, targeting and beneficiary management, operational information management, geographical information systems (GIS), thematic analysis, monitoring, evaluation, accountability and learning.

In terms of GIS, the A&E Unit focuses on leveraging geospatial data to enhance programming and decision-making. This involves developing and implementing GIS tools and methodologies to strengthen spatial analysis, visualization, and geodata management throughout the project cycle. The unit ensures adherence to GIS standards and best practices, providing technical support and capacity building.

Purpose of the Position

The A&E GIS Analyst Associate plays a key role in developing and maintaining GIS solutions that support the A&E Unit’s mission. At its core, the role focuses on strengthening GIS tools and managing geospatial data, ensuring that programs are evidence-based and outcome-driven across diverse contexts.

Beyond geospatial work, the associate also brings value by applying non-GIS tools and contributing to broader data management and analysis efforts. This cross-cutting support ensures the A&E Unit can deliver robust, data-informed insights that drive effective decision-making and impactful programming.
