What we do


The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.



The Associate will contribute to the work of the 10-person Unit for Persons Deprived of Liberty, which sits within the ICRC’s Protection and Assistance Programs. The position has a distinct focus but shares some tasks with another Associate in the same unit.

As a trainee position, the Associate will also have opportunities to develop her knowledge of detention and to apply and expand their existing skills while gaining work experience that will be useful for their career.

Accountabilities & Functional responsibilities


1. Research and data analysis into detention-related issues (60%). In collaboration with colleagues from the Detention Unit, the Protection Data Unit and the Assistance Data Unit, the Associate will:

  • Explore data routinely collected by ICRC teams in the course of their activities in detention.
  • Identify 3-4 possible research questions of interest to ICRC activities.
  • Analyze the data and produce a short report on each thematic issue identified with the support of relevant colleagues and external documents.
  • Help produce and analysis and recommendations on possible improvements to be made to the ICRC’s case management tool used in detention.


2. Consolidation and maintenance of the Detention Access Dashboard (20%). The Associate will be responsible for maintaining the Detention Access Dashboard, which compiles data on ICRC access to places of detention including visiting agreements, strategies and access modalities. The Associate will:

  • Send out the detention access survey to field delegations
  • Clean the data collected and feeding it into the Tableau dashboard
  • Answer requests for information on ICRC access to places of detention


3. Ad hoc support to the unit (20%)

  • The associate will support the work of the Unit in various areas as required. This may involve ad hoc research, logistical and/or administrative support.


  • Internally: Interacts within the team, and with other departments (ASSIST, PROT_FOR, PROT_DATA, PROT_RFL, etc.).
Desired profile and skills


  • University degree (Masters) in social sciences, political sciences, international relations or other related field.
  • Good working knowledge of French and English, including writing and editing.
  • Demonstrable interest in detention (e.g. through study, internship, first professional experience, volunteering, etc).
  • Demonstrated experience with research, quantitative analysis, data visualization and the management of large datasets.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work autonomously
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment
  • Excellent general computer skills, including Microsoft Excel. Knowledge of data visualization softwares (Tableau) and quantitative data analysis softwares an asset.
  • No more than 24 months’ professionally relevant experience since last graduation, of which no more than 12 months’ non-internship paid work.
