Purpose
The Environment and Climate Change Specialist supports the delegation, sub-delegations, and offices in Myanmar in reducing their environmental footprints, particularly regarding sustainable energy, waste management, supply chain management, water usage, and greenhouse gas emissions. Under the supervision of Senior Environment & Climate Change Specialist, the incumbent will provide overall technical support to all Myanmar premises to achieve measurable reductions in environmental impact and greenhouse gas emissions, while fostering a culture of sustainability across the delegation.
Accountabilities & functional responsibilities
- Ensure that the delegation, sub-delegations, and offices join the sustainable delegation process by maintaining regular discussions and necessary support
- Ensure that all the data required for the Environmental Performance Dashboard is collected, and managed appropriately, and work closely with sites, and the Nairobi ECC team and to share results with colleagues and senior management
- Ensure that accountants, premises managers, and green team members receiving training related to Sustainable Delegation Process
- Performs site situation analysis and proposes a package of measures to reduce environmental impact
- Coordinate with relevant departments, and sites to prepare the sustainability budget before the commencement of the PfR period
- Follows up on or drives the project implementation plans, including monitoring project indicators (covering progress, immediate results and longer-term outcomes)
- Captures lessons learned from the project and supports dissemination of the findings
- Organises training and awareness campaigns on environment and climate change for ICRC colleagues
- Develop relationships with appropriate waste handling and recycling service providers
- Ensure QSE assessments are done with third party service providers such as recycling facilities
- Establishes and maintains a network and close communication with key humanitarian actors working on environment and climate change in Myanmar
- Develops and maintains synergies and partnerships with other humanitarian organizations and institutions

Scope & impact
- Typically, supports two to four sites or field programmes throughout the year, obtaining measurable environmental impact reductions.
- In case of direct project management, schemes will typically be small to medium-sized (with a budget of Sfr 5,000–20,000).
- Geographic remit: global.
Relationships
- Internally, interacts with Finance and Administration Managers and (Deputy) Heads of Delegation in project implementation locations.
- Externally, interacts with relevant project managers, providers and corporate partners.
Certifications / Education required
- University degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Management, Climate Change, Natural Resource Management, Sustainable Development, or a related field.
- Relevant training or certification in environmental management, climate change, sustainability, greenhouse gas accounting, renewable energy, waste management, or related fields is an asset.
- Minimum of 3–5 years of relevant professional experience in environment, climate change, sustainability, environmental management, or humanitarian/development programming.
- Demonstrated experience in environmental footprint reduction initiatives, including energy efficiency, waste management, sustainable procurement, water management, and greenhouse gas emissions reduction.
- Experience in stakeholder engagement, capacity building, partnership development, and delivery of training, presentations, and report writing.
- Experience working with humanitarian organizations, international NGOs, UN agencies, the Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement, or development organizations is an asset.
- Strong analytical, coordination, and project management skills, with the ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
- Excellent command of written and spoken English and Myanmar language.
- Strong computer literacy, including Microsoft Office applications and the ability to work with environmental data management tools and dashboards.
