What we do


The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide protection and humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and, at the same time, promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.


Purpose

 

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) seeks an experienced Vehicle Fleet Manager to lead and optimize fleet operations supporting humanitarian activities. In this role, you ensure that transport resources are safe, compliant, efficient, and ready to support field operations in complex environments.

You will manage diverse fleet while leading a team, coordinating with internal and external stakeholders, and contributing to logistics projects that strengthen operational performance. The position combines technical fleet expertise, leadership, in a fast-paced humanitarian setting where reliability, safety, and efficiency are critical.

This role offers the opportunity to apply technical expertise and leadership to support humanitarian operations that make a tangible difference. You will work in an international environment, contribute to high-impact logistics operations, and help ensure that critical transport resources reach the teams delivering aid on the ground.

 

Accountabilities & functional responsibilities

  • Fleet Operations: Ensure the safe, compliant, and efficient management of the delegation’s fleet and related assets. Optimize resource allocation across operational sites, supervise vehicle documentation and regulatory compliance, and oversee fuel management, spare-parts systems, and technical standards in line with ICRC procedures. Provide technical guidance on outsourced transport services when required.
  • Leadership and Team Management: Lead and supervise fleet staff, strengthening technical capacity through coaching, training, and performance management while fostering a collaborative and solution-oriented working environment.
  • Project, Financial and Risk Management: Plan lifecycle management of vehicles and assets. Contribute to fleet budgeting and financial oversight.
  • Scope and Impact: Manage fleet operations at country level, ensuring reliable transport capacity that supports operational effectiveness in complex humanitarian environments.

Scope & impact

 

  • Geographical remit: country-level.
  • Supervises the Drivers.
  • Prepares the fleet budget for the cost centres under their responsibility.

 

Relationships

 

  • Internally, interacts mainly with logistics staff and management within the delegation and with logistics staff at the region/headquarters.
  • Externally, interacts with the government transport sector, police, and suppliers.

 

Certifications / Education required

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Logistics, Transportation Management, or related field
  • Additional certifications in fleet management, logistics, or supply chain is an asset
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English
  • Very good IT skills (e.g. fleet management software, Microsoft office suite)
  • Valid Professional driver's license

 

Professional experience required

 

 

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in fleet management, logistics project management or a similar transport/logistics role.
  • Demonstrated experience improving operational performance (cost reduction, process improvements, innovation).
  • Experience working in international or multicultural environments; experience abroad is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of trucking, freight forwarding, or vehicle dispatching is beneficial.
